When looking at a sackbut, the first thing that someone will probably think is that it appears to closely resemble the trombone. The sackbut is, in fact, the ancestor of the trombone and was often used in music during the Baroque and Renaissance periods. It is a member of the brass family, which is obvious to most people, and was very popular in the past. As time went on and music changed, the sackbut started to lose its popularity as newer instruments took its place. Many might not think that the sackbut is used today, but it is starting to become an interest for many musicians in modern music.

The original name of this particular instrument is interesting and there is some speculation as to where it came from. Regardless of where its original name came from, the instrument is now usually referred to as a trombone, which is a name that is thought to have originated from Italy. The predecessor to this instrument is the trumpet, a simpler instrument that is also a member of the brass instrument family. The change to the sackbut is believed to have happened during the late 14th century. It was also during this time that the instrument was altered to include bends, curves and eventually loops that make the instrument recognizable as the modern trombone.

After the major changes were made to the instrument, some minor alterations occurred later on to perfect the instrument. There were four different sizes of the instrument in order to hit different pitches, including the alto, tenor, bass and double bass.

As mentioned before, the popularity of the sackbut declined as trombones and other instruments were favored over them in the newer music; however, the instrument did not completely die away. It continues to be played, even today as more musicians decide to go for it instead of the more modern instruments. It has been around for a long time and is an instrument that is still a rewarding one to play for anyone who may have an interest in it, but it still lacks in popularity.

Finding the opportunity to learn how to play the instrument in class might not be as easy as it is to try out another, more modern brass instrument. It can be a little more difficult to learn how to play as well, because one has to have good control over their breathing and the instrument. It is far easier to make the wrong sounds than it is to make the right notes.

If chosen to play, the instrument can take much practice and time to master, much like the trombone. Really, they are both fairly similar in so many ways, so finding a teacher might not be as difficult as some might believe. Some people are liars by nature, and others want to please their partners so badly, that they say they are going to do something without actually having the means to do it.

It's simple; if you say you're going to do something, be somewhere or anything else for that matter, try to keep your word. If you do this the majority of the time, your partner will notice, and trust will grow. Even if you make a promise to someone who isn't your partner, keep your word. It will become a habit, and soon you'll be known to be a person of integrity.

2) Show you care. Don't be afraid to show your emotions. It's easier to show someone trust, if you know they care about your feelings and you care about theirs. Would you place your trust in someone who is cold? Would you be quick to trust someone who was going to laugh, belittle or demean you when you make a mistake?

Show your partner how much they mean to you every day if possible. Show them how important their feelings are, and they'll return the favor by placing their trust in you.

3) Show your trust in them first. Jealousy can be a powerful thing, but you shouldn't give in to it. Show your partner you trust them, and they'll probably do the same. Nobody likes to feel like they're being controlled, and if you're continually jealous and over-bearing, your partner is going to start to wonder why. Trust must be built on trust. Both people in the relationship must be willing to trust the other, so why not let that trust start with you?

If you are like most people, you want to improve the way you look and feel. but you are confused by all the options available and fed up with false promises. Not having enough time is the number one reason people say they do not exercise. The simple convenience of squeezing in a quick workout in your own home takes the time excuse out of the equation.

Once you've made the decision to buy home equipment, the key is making the right purchase the first time. If you buy something that doesn't work even once, you will be less likely to try again, and you will ruin a great opportunity to improve your health. Here are some of the top Do's and Don'ts on your path to improved health and fitness.

Do:

-Include strength training in your physical activity routine. Strength training helps build lean muscle tissue, which is your body's fat-burning machinery, and will allow you to burn more calories at rest.

-Include cardio exercise in your physical activity routine. Walking is a good start but losing a single pound of fat equals 3,500 calories burned, and walking will yield limited results, compared to other forms of higher-intensity cardio exercise. For example, walking at a slow pace of less than 2.0 mph for an hour will burn approximately 175 calories for a person who weighs 155 pounds. Higher-intensity exercise, like running or using an elliptical trainer at approximately 70% of your maximum heart rate, can burn over twice the calories in half the time.

-The most effective, non-impact piece of equipment available is a good elliptical trainer.

-Choose short workouts - you will have a better chance of sticking with your routine. Start out with 20 minutes of cardio exercise four times per week and 10 minutes of strength training, focusing on only two muscle groups with each workout, for a total of 30 minutes. Long-term fitness results will happen only if you include physical activity in the form of regular exercise as a part of your routines and habits. There are 168 hours in a week. Give just two of these hours per week to exercise to improve your health with this simple system.

Don't:

-Hastily make purchasing decisions.

-Be tricked into buying a piece of abdominal equipment as the solution for achieving your fitness goals. The Ab Lounger, Ab Roller, Ab Rocker, Ab Doer, the Bean, Red Exerciser and other abdominal equipment claim that you can lose inches and get washboard abs by using their products. This is one of the biggest deceptions in the fitness industry. It doesn't work that way. Although everyone wants an easy way to trim away fat or reduce inches from your waistline, there isn't anything on the market that will magically accomplish this. The human body does not have a mechanism to selectively burn fat in specific areas. You can do abdominal exercises until the cows come home, but you will never lose inches around your mid-section or see "washboard abs" until the fat around your waistline is gone. Spot reduction is a lie, and any product that claims or implies otherwise is a scam and a big, fat rip-off.

-Waste your money on electrical muscle stimulators (EMS). For years, manufacturers of ab belts that stimulate muscles using small currents of electricity made distorted claims, including weight loss, spot reduction, shaping and contouring, and cellulite removal. Claims by these manufacturers were so outrageous that the FDA filed litigation to protect consumers and halt the use of deceptive claims. Amazingly (and shamefully), the FDA then approved the Slendertone (EMS), but the manufacturer still uses deceptive before-and-after images to make people think that they can lose weight and drop inches by using their product.

-Be taken by false promises made by manufacturers of sauna belts that claim or imply they will help you lose inches around your midsection. The only thing you will lose by purchasing this utterly useless device is temporary water weight and some permanent cash. Sauna belts are a complete and total lie and will not help you achieve your health and fitness goals.

If your diamond was purchased in 1970, and it was a D color, and flawless, and weighed 1.00 carat, you probably paid around $3500.00 for it. If you purchased that same diamond in 1980, you would have paid $63,000.00 for it.

The same diamond, if purchased today (2008) would be around $23,000.00. These prices are based on the purchase being made in a retail jewelry store and not from the internet.

Looking at the above prices, you can see that there has been a steady increase in prices since 1970 with the exception of 1980. From $3500.00 to $23,000.00 is about a 650% increase. This is about the same increase as gas prices for the same period in the US.

If we look at 1970 to 1980 we see a jump of around 1800%. What happened? From 1979 to 1981 diamonds were being sold as investments. Consumers were being told that top quality diamonds were in short supply and would continue to rise in price. This was not true. However, consumers continued to purchase them at a record pace and a record price.

In 1981 the bottom fell out and the market collapsed. Over the next few years there was an up and down cycle and finally the market settled back to where it would have been had there been no so called investment craze.

Millions of dollars were lost during this crash and many were left holding diamonds that they would never recover their money from. I still do appraisals today on diamonds from that period, and many hope they can recover their $63,000.00 on a stone that is now worth around $23,000.00. And some of them still want to shoot the messenger. (Appraiser)

During this period most of the diamonds were sold with Diamond Grading Reports, or what became known as "Certs". The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) issued most of these. However, other laboratories started to spring up around the world.

The top labs issuing grading reports today are GIA, AGS, EGL, and IGI. In my opinion the two that set the world standard today are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the American Gem Society (AGS).

When you purchase a diamond in today's market, whether it is from a retail jeweler, or an internet seller, it should have one of these Grading Reports. Buying on the internet has its advantages. Let's take the $23,000.00 diamond that we discussed above. This diamond can be found on the internet for around $18,000.00. That's quite a savings.

All you need to do is find the stone that you want, place your order, and in about 2 to 3 days it will be delivered to your front door. If you don't like it, or it is not what you wanted, most companies have a 30 day return policy.

When buying from a retail jeweler you usually have several choices of stores in your local area which allow you to visit them, and talk to a salesperson face to face. The salesperson should be able to show you several diamonds that meet your criteria and thoroughly explain them to you.

I asked at the beginning if diamonds were a good value in today's market. My answer is "yes" as long as you're buying the stone for all the right reasons. The right reasons will be different things to different people. It might be for you to wear yourself, or give as a gift, or the most special of all... to give to that special person as an engagement ring. Just keep in mind that a diamond is bought as an investment in beauty and not as a financial investment.

For many decades the islands were considered impenetrable but now canoe trips are arranged for the tourists and the locals through the tunnels and the cracks in the rocks. Ko Phi Phi Islands are yet another place to visit on your holidays in Thailand. The twin islands are full of natural splendour. The largest of the two, Ko Phi Phi Don, is dumbbell shaped and has a coastline that is full of white beaches and further inland tropical rainforest.

Discipline yourself to ignore the pages that flash in front of you, and carry on accumulating hits. This is the sole reason for surfing.

Programs have recently been set up which allow a url to be submitted and entered into a huge rotator. Generally a bulk supply of hits are purchased from many Traffic Exchanges and all url’s benefit from being promoted in this way. Saves all the time spent at a keyboard.

What was once confined to the school yard has expanded into cyberspace, and these days, cyberbullies are causing more than just hurt feelings. Studies suggest that more than 42% of kids have been bullied while online. With serious results in many cyberbullying cases, including suicide, it is a concept that definitely deserves the attention of computer users on a worldwide basis.

What is Cyberbullying?
Cyberbullies use various aspects of technology to threaten, harass, or embarrass other internet users. Victims are often teens or preteens who live in the same area or attend the same school district as the cyberbully.

On a fairly frequent basis, cyberbullies send e-mails, instant messages, or text messages to the intended victim’s mobile phone or computer. Cyberbullying can also include leaving hurtful messages on a victim’s blog. From threats of physical harm to willfully disclosing personal data and photos to many other internet users, the harmful behavior perpetrated by cyberbullies tends to defame and embarrass victims. The cyberbullies of today tend to be the victims of yesterday, and bullies and victims trade roles on a fairly regular basis.

Cyberbullying can occur directly or indirectly. In the case of direct bullying, one bully communicates with just one victim. The messages they trade back and forth are only between the two of them. In the case of indirect bullying, others are involved with the process. Often adults are involved, and few of the bullies know the victim. Whether they manage to get the victim’s IM account or blog banned or they encourage others to post horrible information about the victim, the danger is very real because so many individuals are ganging up on the victim. With more bullies comes more power and more damage.

Just One Example
On October 17, 2006, teenager Megan Meier committed suicide. Soon after opening a MySpace account, Megan had begun to correspond with an individual whose screen name was ‘Josh Evans.’ While the two spend some time corresponding, the tone of the correspondence changed dramatically in October. ‘Josh Evans’ sent several hurtful messages to Megan. The final one read, “The world would be better off without you.” Megan hung herself that evening. Federal prosecutors are currently considering charges of both wire fraud and cyber fraud against the cyberbully who called herself ‘Josh Evans.’

The Causes of Cyberbullying
Cyberbullies tend to be motivated by many different things. From anger at their victims to frustration with the world around them, cyberbullies often have a jumble of emotions that lead them to harass victims. Some cyberbullies even attack victims for entertainment or power. With so many aspects of technology at any given bully’s disposal, cyberbullying is neither difficult nor uncommon.

Unfortunately, experts don’t think all of the causes of cyberbullying are related to the causes behind traditional bullying. Studies have show that both the type of communication that occurs and the demographics involved with cyberbullying tend not to correlate with those of their offline counterparts, leaving lots of parents, school officials, and researchers in the dark as to the exact causes.

What You Can Do About It
The best way to handle cyberbullying is to prevent it from ever occurring. Educating potential victims and creating awareness campaigns can help to stop the process. Ensuring that both schools and parents are involved with internet use as a whole may also help to prevent it from occurring. Teaching kids to keep their information safe while online is another way to prevent cyberbullying.

If it does occur, it is essential that it be addressed immediately. While it may not be a case for law enforcement, getting the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and/or host site involved is probably a good idea. Keep in mind that every cyberbully attack is different, so helping the victim to clearly communicate the type of threat, the frequency of messages, the potential sources, and the nature of the threat will help to ensure that proper action is taken.

In some cases, law enforcement must be involved. Contact members of the police department if a threat of physical violence is present, if the material involved is obscene, or if physical harassment is taking place as a result of the cyberbullying. At times, civil prosecution may be an option as well. Should the victim’s rights be infringed on during the bullying, it is a good idea to contact an attorney.

Potential victims must know how to respond to a cyberbully should they encounter one while online. In case of an incident, the victim should:

Ignore the emails, messages, or postings that use harmful language.
Not forward bullying messages to others.
Ignore emails, messages, and postings from known bullies.
Block the addresses of known bullies.
Show the messages to trusted adults including parents, teachers, or counselors.

An increasingly serious problem in today’s technology based world, cyberbullying must be addressed on an ongoing basis.

If you've never been to New York City, you can't claim to have gone unless you trek on out to the infamous boardwalks of Coney Island. It is important to understand first of all that Coney Island is only open seasonally so you have to plan your journey accordingly. The vast majority of attractions at Coney Island close either immediately or very soon after Labor Day. The beach and the actual boardwalk are open to the public year round, some times are simply lonelier than others. Nathan's Hot Dogs and the New York Aquarium remain open after the summer season has ended and operate most days throughout the year. The Coney Island Museum is Open on the weekend from 12:00 PM until 5:00 PM year-round. During the summer season when tourism is high along the boardwalk the two major theme parks: Astroland and Deno's Wonder Wheel Park sponsor firework shows on Fridays at 9:30.

The amusement parks of Coney Island are only part of the attraction but they work to bring many people to this very unique entertainment venue each and every year. Astroland Amusement Park is the largest amusement park in New York City. The Cyclone is the most famous ride in this particular park and this is a ride that is well known by roller coaster enthusiasts around the world. It is a wooden roller coaster that offers quite a thrilling ride. Other great rides at this park include the Astroflume, The Break Dancer, the Astroland Carousel, The Swings, Top Spin, Dante's Inferno, Power Surge, and Astro Tower. For the little ones there is a very nice selection of kiddie rides that will keep them entertained while older children enjoy some of the more thrill-oriented rides. If you're looking for a day of great food and great fun in the sun Astroland is a great place to be.

Deno's Wonder Wheel Park is most famous for its Wonder Wheel. The cars on this magnificent ride are red, white, and blue (rather patriotic of them wasn't it?) with swinging red and blue cards and stationary white cars. The Spook-A-Rama is another popular if not frightening ride that is offered at Deno's Wonder Wheel Park. If you need a shot of thrills and spills try the Super Shot but only if you're 52" or more or the Thunderbolt, which has a 48" height requirement. And what day at Coney Island wouldn't be complete without a taste of bumper cars? There are also plenty of rides for the little ones to choose from on their outing as well.

For something a little more sedate than thrills and chills at the amusement parks, Coney Island is also home to the New York Aquarium at Coney Island. This is a great way to learn about marine life and enjoy watching your children watching fascinating sea creatures they would be unlikely to see in other circumstances. There are more than 8,000 animals represented at the New York aquarium. Not only is this a fascinating adventure of its own, you won't have to sacrifice your hairstyle in order to enjoy it.

The Coney Island Museum is also well worth taking a peek. You will find relics of old rides and memorabilia of days gone by in the museum as well as incredible views of the rides available today. The admission price is rather affordable at 99 cents and it's a fun place to visit and get out of the sun for a bit. No trip to Coney Island is really complete without at least stopping into the Museum. Besides, these might be the cleanest restrooms on the island. Coney Island is one of the greatest things about a visit to New York. If you can schedule your trip to New York when the Parks are open and the boardwalk is bustling I highly recommend you spend a weekend night out on the boardwalk.

The type of care your turtle will require depends, for the most part, on the type of turtle you plan on getting. While you will certainly want to learn as much as you can about the specific breed of turtle you select, there are some basic rules that apply to pet turtle care, and these rules are different for the two main categories of turtles-water turtles and land turtles. To ensure your turtle's long life and happiness, you should strive to give him a comfortable, home-like environment. Many people choose to keep their land turtles outside in specially designed pens. This enables the turtles to not only enjoy the great outdoors, but to hibernate in the winter just as they would in the wild.

While the housing needs of water and land turtles differ dramatically, their diets are actually quite similar. As you learn to take care of a pet turtle, you'll discover that turtles, like most people, are omnivores. This means you'll probably be adding some groceries to your list! There are several varieties of pre-made ""turtle chow"" available at pet stores, but it's best to use those products sparingly and offer your turtle a wide range of foods. Most land and water turtles alike will happily devour crickets, earthworms, and snails. Water turtles love chasing feeder fish such as minnows and goldfish around their tank and many will also eat cooked chicken, shrimp, and tuna Never feed your turtle hamburger meat, as it's far too high in fat for your turtle to digest properly. Turtles also enjoy a nice salad or fruit plate from time to time. They're particularly fond of Romaine lettuces (never feed iceberg or spinach), dandelion greens, carrots, cantaloupe, strawberries, blackberries, tomatoes, and apples. Who knows! Having a turtle might just help you on your way to healthier eating habits (though we probably can't say the same for exercise).

While you may not feel like a pet turtle care expert right now, you'll hopefully have many happy years to become one! Caring for a pet turtle can be an experience that is both unique and rewarding in a pet-keeping culture dominated by dog and cat owners. While a turtle may not greet you at the door or curl up purring on your feet, it provides a lower maintenance option for busy people who don't have time for a dog or cat. At the end of a long, hard day, a turtle's gentle, peaceful, low-stress personality will surely be a calming influence and inspiring refuge in a speed-driven society. Take some time to relax, munch on a piece of fruit, and enjoy time well spent in the company of your new turtle!

The rise of digital cameras has turned our focus very much onto the technical aspects of photography. Unfortunately, in our ongoing rush for more advanced equipment, the artistic aspects of photography are often neglected.

If you bought a great digital camera and your photos still look like snapshots, it is not the fault of your equipment. Perhaps it is time to start looking at your subjects with a more creative eye, and think a little more about good composition. Where to start? Well, a good place to start is the Rule Of Thirds, a convention used every day by experienced photographers.

What is the Rule Of Thirds? It is a sort of guideline to help you structure your composition in a balanced way that pleases the eye. Like all rules, it is made to be broken, but we will look at that later. Experience will give you the confidence to decide when you need to apply the Rule Of Thirds, and when you can get by without it. However, before you can make that decision you need to understand the Rule Of Thirds and how it works.

Imagine the rectangular shape of any photograph. Now draw a horizontal line one third from the top of the frame, and another one third from the bottom. Then draw a vertical line, one third from the left, and another one third from the right. Your rectangle should now be divided into nine equal sections.

According to the Rule Of Thirds, the lines that divide the picture into thirds are the most effective places to position objects in your photo. So, for example, the horizon should be positioned on or near the line a third from the top or a third from the bottom of the picture. Vertical objects like trees should be placed on or near the lines a third from the left or right of the picture.

Also according to the rule, the most powerful points in the composition are the areas where the lines intersect. So, if your horizon is a third from the top of the frame, a house or tree on the horizon would be best placed a third from the left or right, at the intersecting point of the horizontal and vertical lines. If you have positioned a tree along one of the vertical lines, a bird sitting in a fork of the tree would be best positioned where it intersects with the horizontal line a third from the top.

If this seems hard to follow, sketch it out and it will start to make sense.

If this seems a little too structured and organised for the real world, that's because in most cases it is. After twenty years in photography, I can tell you that nature is not so neatly packaged for our convenience. You cannot expect all the objects in your photos to fall into place according to the Rule Of Thirds. However, by using the rule as a general framework, you can begin to create structure in your photography

Why does the Rule Of Thirds work? Don't know, don't need to know. But it does work. It satisfies our sense of visual proportion, so that photos structured in this way appear balanced in the eye of the viewer. You can prove this for yourself right now, just by looking at a book of your favourite photos. When you apply the framework to each picture, you will probably find that most of them, at least loosely, fit the Rule Of Thirds.

Many photographers have a natural sense of visual balance. They take their photos according to the rule of thirds without being aware of it. They may simply shoot the picture that 'looks right' or 'feels right' to them, unconsciously applying the rule as they go. For new photographers who are struggling with composition, this simple guideline will make a world of difference. In time, and with experience, these beginners will develop their own natural 'feel' for composition.

Am I suggesting that every photo must be taken using the rule of thirds? Is any photo that falls outside these guidelines a failure? Absolutely not.

Some photos are made more effective by deliberately ignoring the rule of thirds. It is possible to focus the viewer's attention on a particular feature, by positioning it where we would not normally expect to see it. If it is done well, the impact of a photo can be enhanced by disrupting the natural sense of visual balance. I can give you a very simple example from my field of nature photography.

A sunset photo is usually all about the sky. A photographer can add impact to the sky by lowering the horizon to well below the 'normal' horizon level. The result will be a sky that really towers over the foreground and imposes more strongly on the entire picture.

There are probably millions of other examples of great photos that were taken outside the framework of the Rule Of Thirds. As I said at the start, all rules are made to be broken. That does not mean that photographers should not know the rule and practice it. There is no harm in breaking with convention. The important thing is that you do it knowingly and for a reason, to make your photos more effective. Breaking the rules is a lot more fun when you understand the rules you are breaking.

In general, there are a variety of fields in nursing that are available to be pursued, even within cardiac nursing. For a nurse that has received specialized training in cardiac care, the career path is wide open. With the number of people in the United States suffering from heart disease, combined with the increasing nursing shortage, the numbers of nurses that are needed for cardiac rehabilitation will only increase.

Ultimately, the decision whether to work in a large cardiac care center or a smaller hospital is a matter of personal choice. Some individuals prefer the variety of working in a smaller hospital where you are required to have many skills, but with the knowledge that the more interesting cases will be transported out of your hospitals and the advancements in cardiac care will not reach your hospital for years.

Others prefer the atmosphere of a larger hospital, where you are expected to know one thing and know it well. If you are not sure which you prefer, talk to nurses that have worked in each and get a feel for the type of work environment each hospital provides.

The decision to home school your child or not is definitely not an easy one to make. There are a lot of considerations to think about and deliberate with your spouse before you plunge into a solid and sound conclusion.

Home schooling needs your commitment to spend time to teach your children. The course will take a full chunk of your day. This involves planning the lessons, setting up your sessions and the materials needed, working one on one with your child as he or she progresses through the projects and experiments and checking their work after. In home schooling, you will be multi-tasking as the science/math/gym or music teacher, as the guidance councilor, as the principal and even as the maintenance personnel. Time management skills are a strong factor in making home schooling work.

Parents should be able to allocate time for learning and ample time to take care of the basic household chores as well. This could mean sacrificing personal time and space to accommodate your child's learning development. Home schooling is definitely not for those moms who would want a separate career for themselves. The former is a full time job in itself.

Financially, home school may be more practical for some families. For one, the parent will be able to save on lunch money, bus fares and other school expenses usually involving extra-curricular activities. However, the parents should also consider that you will be buying your own books and materials needed for your child's home education. It is also a given that at least one is a stay at home parent.

Pressure may be placed on the spouse who works single handedly to supplement the household needs and expenses. Nevertheless, if one is resourceful and really good at time management, one can probably handle home schooling and carrying out freelance home based jobs that are prevalent nowadays.

One may think that home schooling may deprive children of social activities and interaction with other kids as compared to when they go to a regular private or public school. Although children may spend more time at home, this does not mean that they can have no social life. They always have the chance to go out and play with their friends and neighbors at some point during the day. Some also have the opinion that children bond and have greater emotional development if they stay and learn at home with their parents especially during the formative years of a child. Children who are home schooled are said to be more mature as they influenced more by the traits and experiences of their parents who are with them 24/7. You may also be saving your child from being swayed by peer pressure or cliques that are popular among schools nowadays.

As mentioned earlier, the choice to go for home schooling should be agreed upon by both parents. A one-sided decision may not work well and cause disagreements from time to time in your household. It would be difficult working for a course of action when you do not have the support and encouragement of your spouse. If you choose to, you may also ask your child whether he wants to be home schooled or not. His answer may not make so much of a difference as you have the parental authority to choose what is best for him but it may be great to know what he thinks. Remember, it will be easier for him to learn if he is willing and acceptable to the process.

One of the reasons people don't bother to maintain their lawn (or have difficulty doing so) is that they believe there's too much work involved. They might simply have a problem with figuring out how often to do each of the necessary tasks, when to do them, and when not to do them.

Like most lawn care issues, solving this problem is easy, once you know how: simply create a schedule takes all the guess-work out of maintaining the lawn, and allows you to follow a set routine that tells you exactly what to do and when to do it.

How to Start

The first step in creating a lawn maintenance schedule is writing down every lawn care task that you will need to do in a single year. That includes frequent tasks such as watering and mowing, semi-frequent tasks such as fertilizing, and those you'll only do once or twice a year, such as de-thatching and aerating.

Once you've got your list, categorize them according to how often they need to be done. For example, create different categories for tasks that need to be completed more than once a week, once a week, once a month, twice a month, once per season, and once a year.

How often do you need to carry out each task? This depends partly on where you live, and partly on your lawn. Common wisdom says, for example, that lawns must be watered at least once a week during the summer. If you live in warmer part of the country, you may need to water twice-weekly. If you live in a cooler part where rain is frequent in the summer, you might need to water once every ten days, or even every two weeks. (Don't forget that one deep soak is better than two lighter ones. Aim to give your lawn an inch of water per week, but remember that it's usually better if that inch is given in one session.)

Creating the Schedule

With your categorized list completed, you can then start to create the schedule. This part requires you have something-such as a calendar, or a computer spreadsheet-that you can add your tasks to. If you prefer to do this on a computer or online, take advantage of free programs such as Google Calendar that provides you with a calendar that you can add tasks to and modify as you please (one particularly useful thing about Google Calendar is that you can set it to email you reminders when an appointment is coming up, so it's very difficult to miss a scheduled task).

You can make the schedule as detailed or as simple as you like. For example, you can choose to schedule by noting down the activities you will do each month, or you can actually schedule specific tasks for specific dates. If you choose the latter style, try to schedule larger tasks for weekends (and really big ones for holiday weekends), and smaller tasks for weekdays.
Once you've decided how you're going to make the schedule, simply go ahead and slot in each task as frequently as it needs to be done.

Make it Flexible

Flexibility is going to be an important part of any schedule you create. For example, your lawn's water needs will change according to the amount of rain you get in any given week, so don't forget to factor that into your schedule. That doesn't mean you have to go crazy creating two or three different schedules, but it does mean that in an unexpectedly dry week or month, you'll have to find time to give your lawn the extra water it will need.

If you want to create a highly detailed schedule, it might be worthwhile penciling in one or two “floating” hours each week that you can use for any unscheduled tasks that come up.

Follow It

Finally, the most important part of any schedule: the execution. Creating a lawn maintenance schedule is pointless if you don't follow it, so make sure the schedule you make is one that you're going to want to follow.

If you have a large lawn that you don't enjoy watering, for example, consider investing in an automatic sprinkler system that takes care of that task for you. It might be expensive, but you'll save yourself lots of time, and having that task taken care of might give you the motivation to keep up with the rest of your maintenance schedule!

The plastic surgeons in Australia are certainly going great lengths to highlight the dangers of traveling overseas for cosmetic surgery. The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons commissioned a survey of its membership in April 2007, following concerns that local plastic surgeons have to pick up the pieces when things go wrong for Australians having cosmetic surgery in countries such as Thailand and Malaysia. According to this survey, of the 68 plastic surgeons who responded to the survey, 40 reported seeing patients with complications or poor results, and 15 reported treating more than one botched case. 19 believed that they were seeing more problems now than three years ago.

While this survey particularly focuses on the surgeries done overseas, it is vehemently silent on the state of affairs in Australia. The fact of the matter is that the industry in Australia is highly unregulated, and there are now growing concerns that some surgeons lack both qualifications and surgical experience. The legalisation of medical advertising in 1994 in Australia has led to an influx of non-surgeons advertising themselves as 'cosmetic surgeons'. Some of them use smoke and mirrors to hide their lack of specialist training, substituting bogus qualifications instead.

In 2005 alone, 24 cosmetic-surgery complaints were heard by Queensland Health Rights Commissioner, up from 22 in 2004, and 13 in 2003. Negligence claims against plastic surgeons jumped more than 70 per cent between 1995 and 2004. The Health Care Complaints Commission received 87 complaints about plastic and cosmetic surgery in the three years to June 2006.

Claims against cosmetic surgeons have ballooned by 72%, according to the 2005 figures from four insurers released by the Medical Indemnity Industry Association of Australia (MIIAA). The 72% increase, which occurred between two three-year periods, from 1995-1998 to 2001-2004, is viewed as an estimate. The MIIAA used three-year periods to reduce the effects of a one-off spike in claims caused by tort law reforms, but the spike has still skewed the data.

The 1999 New South Wales Ministerial Committee of Inquiry into Cosmetic Surgery, the only investigation into the industry thus far, found little reporting and monitoring of complications arising from cosmetic surgery, limited consumer safeguards and no independent, reliable information available to consumers about the skills of cosmetic surgery providers. More than eight years after the NSW Cosmetic Surgery Inquiry, there are still no basic education or training standards at state level. Legislation does not prevent a doctor from setting up shop after a weekend course in the Bahamas on liposuction. This lack of regulation has allowed any registered medical doctor in NSW to describe himself or herself as a cosmetic surgeon, even with no formal surgical training beyond a basic medical degree.

In these circumstances, how fair is it to lay the blame solely on the overseas cosmetic surgery? The fact remains that cosmetic surgery is a medical procedure and like any other procedure, any patient considering cosmetic surgery should think it through carefully first, consult GP, and meet with a specialist plastic surgeon to discuss their needs and treatment plan.
