When you don't get enough sleep, you may feel less alert, less energetic and maybe even more confused, irritable and fatigued. Lack of sleep affects not only your energy level but also your mental and social functioning. You may find it more difficult to concentrate; or find that you lose patience quickly, become less interactive in your relationships and that you are less productive at work and more prone to accidents. Each night that you do not get enough sleep makes the next day worse. All these effects on the body are not only from lack of sleep, but also from lack of dreaming.

Waking up during the night may not be the problem? You need sleep just as much as you need air, water and food. But your sleep/dream cycle also makes you wake up during the night.

As you go through the stages of sleep, it is normal to be awake for short periods during the night. In fact, you should expect to wake up at least four times during the night because the various stages of sleep occur in 90-minute cycles all through the night (you can test this by checking the clock before you go to sleep at night, and again when you wake up during the middle of the night.)

This means that if you sleep for six hours a night, you will have four “dream cycles,” which you should be using to access information (most people dream an average of 100 minutes a night).

When you dream your subconscious takes over and works to sort out the challenges of the day. It attempts to answer your questions and give you helpful advice through the images in your dreams. For this reason, you should give you subconscious something specific to work on, so it doesn’t just go off and randomly try to find information on whatever it thinks is the most important thing to you. When you direct your subconscious by asking the right questions before you go to sleep, it takes those questions and goes to work, using any input that it has been fed, and anything it can gather from the outside. Your subconscious believes everything is real, true and possible, which is why it will come up with things you may not have thought of before.

The reason you may not remember your dreams is that in REM sleep (where dreaming occurs) the brain cells that secrete the chemicals needed for memory are shut off. This lack of memory capability causes a loss of self-reflective awareness, loss of critical judgment, and the loss of linear logic.

It is very important for you to try to remember what you dream in order to resolve any issues you may have. Do not immediately dismiss any information you receive in your dreams as impossibility. If you are going to dream for 100 minutes a night, it is worth taking a moment to remember those dreams when you wake up throughout the night.

One of the most popular features of Internet portals, websites, pages and even emails is a frame that features an organized list of news headlines and periodic updates from other web sources. Really Simple Syndication, formerly “Rich Site Summary” or simply, RSS makes this possible.

Most users visit a lot of websites whose content continually change, such as news sites, community organization or professional association information pages, medical websites, product support pages, and blogs. As Internet surfing became an intrinsic part of business and leisure, it became important to get rid of the very tedious task of repeatedly returning to each website to see updated content.

RSS easily distributes information from different websites to a wider number of Internet users. RSS aggregators are programs that use RSS to source these updates, and then organize those lists of headlines, content and notices for easy reading. It allows computers to automatically retrieve and read the content that users want, then track changes and personalize lists of headlines that interests them.

The specially made computer programs called “RSS aggregators” were created to automatically find and retrieve the RSS feeds of pre-selected internet sites on behalf of the user and organize the results accordingly. (RSS feeds and aggregators are also sometimes referred to as "RSS Channels" and "RSS Readers".)

The RSS aggregator is like a web browser for RSS content. HTML presents information directly to users, and RSS automatically lets computers communicate with one another. While users use browsers to surf the web then load and view each page of interest, RSS aggregators keeps track of changes to many websites. The titles or descriptions are links themselves and can be used to load the web page the user wants.

RSS starts with an original Web site that has content made available by the administrator. The website creates an RSS document and registers this content with an RSS publisher that will allow other websites to syndicate the documents. The Web site also produces an RSS feed, or channel, which is available together with all other resources or documents on the particular Web server. The website will register the feed as an RSS document, with a listed directory of appropriate RSS publishers.

An RSS feed is composed of website content listed from newest to oldest. Each item usually consists of a simple title describing the item along with a more complete description and a link to a web page with the actual content being described. In some instances, the short description or title line is the all the updated information that a user wants to read (for example, final games scores in sports, weblogs post, or stock updates). Therefore, it is not even necessary to have a web page associated with the content or update items listed -- sometimes all the needed information that users need would be in the titles and short summaries themselves.

The RSS content is located in a single file on a webpage in a manner not very different from typical web pages. The difference is that the information is written in the XML computer code for use by an RSS aggregator and not by a web user like a normal HTML page.

There are 2 main parts that are involved in RSS syndication, namely: the source end and the client end.

The client end of RSS publishing makes up part of the system that gathers and uses the RSS feed. For example, Mozilla FireFox browser is typically at the client end of the RSS transaction. A user’s desktop RSS aggregator program also belongs to the client end.

Once the URL of an RSS feed is known, a user can give that address to an RSS aggregator program and have the aggregator monitor the RSS feed for changes. Numerous RSS aggregators are already preconfigured with a ready list of RSS feed URLs for popular news or information websites that a user can simply choose from.

There are many RSS aggregators that can be used by all Internet users. Some can be accessed through the Internet, some are already incorporated into email applications, and others run as a standalone program inside the personal computer.

RSS feeds have evolved into many uses. Some uses gaining popularity are:

·For online store or retail establishments: Notification of new product arrivals
·For organization or association newsletters: title listings and notification of new issues, including email newsletters
·Weather Updates and other alerts of changing geographic conditions
·Database management: Notification of new items added, or new registered members to a club or interest group.

The uses of feeds will continue to grow, because RSS aggregators make access to any information that individual users like more convenient and fun.

There are really only two emotions in the universe, fear and love. You’re either loving or you’re fearing, regardless of what you do. Fear leads to a very unsatisfactory experience in life, and love leads to joy, happiness and fulfillment. And, the doorway to this love is gratitude.

Isn’t it interesting that the simplest formula for happiness in life, “Look at the bright side,” is so very difficult to do? Actually, that’s why I can make a profitable living as a marriage counselor. People get so wrapped up in their fear that they can’t get along with a partner. They are afraid about what they are not getting, or what they won’t get, or they even fear feeling the bad feelings of what they did get but didn’t want. They react, strike out, and cower, and then, finally, come to see me. We then put their fear away and bring the love back out.

After we’ve worked a little relationship magic they leave with gratitude. They love their partner and they can’t believe how blessed they are. They give thanks for what they formerly missed seeing, and experience the fullness of their love.

Occasionally it takes years to help a couple do this. Why? Because they won’t give up their fear. And, as long as they are scared they have extreme difficulty counting their blessings and feeling their love.

There are so many reasons for our fear. We may have been born with a physiological nervous constitution. We may have experienced childhood abuse that programmed our expectation for further pain. Happiness may have been interrupted by a very difficult loss along the way. Or, we may have married an abusive partner. Regardless, we have deep associations of fear towards many things, including our partner. The fear is very often deeply programmed and not easily accessed for change.

So, how do we solve the fear problem? I first heard it from Stephen Covey, the writer about the habits of successful people: “Swallow a frog every morning. After that, everything else looks easy!”

The frog is a symbol for whatever we fear the most that day. Do it first! After that, the rest seems easy and we usually feel better about ourselves and everyone around us. In fact, after facing our greatest fear we usually feel gratitude for the wonder of this life all around us, and that leads to the experience of Love.

So, why does it sometimes take me years with some couples? Because I have to push, pry, manipulate, trick, convince and use a host of other methods to get people to swallow all those frogs! And some folks have a lot of them to swallow.

The lesson for you is to choose to swallow your own frogs before life forces you to do so. Face your fears! Do it on your own terms. Every day choose a fear, large or small, to face into and conquer. What is it you don’t want to do? What is it you need to do but won’t? Do it first. Don’t wait. It’s all down hill after that.

The more fears you face and conquer, the better job of loving you will do. And, that is what your relationship always needs.

Writing profitable ads for Google Adword Campaigns is not difficult if you follow a few copywriting secrets. The first key to successful advertising writing is to understand the concept of features and benefits. Features are qualities of the product or service. They are descriptive words like yellow, strong, big etc. Benefits tell the customer what’s in it for them. A benefit focused ad will mention phrases like will last long or easy to find when you need it.

When you begin writing an ad, write down a list of all of the features and then their corresponding benefits. Then put the major benefit of the product into a short sentence. Edit that sentence until you have a short phrase that conveys the same message. For example, if your product has a benefit of lasts a long time you can condense that same idea into the phrase long lasting. Delete unnecessary words in your ad like a, an, on and the.

Make sure to use the keywords in your headline. Google will put the keyword in boldface which will grab your reader’s attention. The headline of your ad should be about benefits to your customer and not the business name. In fact, if you use a business name as a headline your click-thru rate will be low and bid prices will be high. Your ad should focus on your customer and what they want. If you can, add keywords to the second and third line of the ad as well.

Use your space creatively. With only three lines in an ad, you can run the second and third lines together to create one statement. You can also use the headline with the second and third lines to make a longer sentence. Every word in your headline should be capitalized, but avoid using all caps. In the second and third lines, use normal capitalization. Avoid crazy punctuation and wild claims in your ads.

The following simple formulas can be used again and again to create winning headlines:
How to ________ and _________
What _______ doesn’t want you to know.
Get more _______ for less ______

Here’s a look at those headlines formulas in practice:
How to smoke and not suffer the consequences.
What the IRS doesn’t want you to know.
Get more fun for fewer dollars.

You must learn to “steal.” Look at other successful ads for inspiration. Study good examples from other advertisers and substitute your own wording. All the top copywriters do it. You can keep a collection of strong words and phrases that can be used for a variety of products.

Pay attention to your word choice. A single word change in your headline can make your click-thru rate go from .07% to 5%. Try using attention grabbing words (free, new, genuine) and call-to-action phrases (buy today, save 50%, download free trial, sale ends tomorrow, buy today and save 70%, offer ends soon, hurry before they’re gone). You can use action verbs (discover, retire, boost, increase, avoid, uncover, eliminate prevent), emotional words (cheap, sale, limited time, quick, easy, powerful, don’t, lose out), and motivational words (‘now is your chance,’ ‘you should know,’ ‘ discover your potential,’ ‘ make money now’).

You can also show how your product or service is unique with words like faster, wider variety, discount, most comprehensive and lowest price. Using 3rd party endorsements can also be helpful. For example, “blows away Toyota Camry” says Auto World.

Another way to increase clicks on your ad is to use numbers whenever possible. Instead of using Make Lots of Money try using Make $847 per week. The more specific you can be the better. You can also be specific in the price. Mentioning the price in an ad discourages freebie hunters. However, if you have a free sample to offer that will eventually lead to a sale, use free but make sure to avoid capitalizing all of the letters or using an exclamation point (ie: FREE!!!).

It is essential to remember that the goal is not to be #1 on the ads page. Ideally, you want to be on the first page in position #2-#8. Why? There are lots of “tire kickers” who click the #1 ad spot just to click it and have no real intention of buying. Fewer people do that to #2-#8. Shoot for being on the first page, just not in the first spot. Anything below the first page is a waste of your advertising dollars.

Since Google doesn’t require you to list affiliate status anymore, you don’t have to designate that you are an affiliate. You’ll increase sales by removing your affiliate indicator, if you have one in an existing ad.

Finally, it is extremely important to test 2 ads simultaneously. Google will automatically rotate the 2 versions of the ad so you can tell which writing gets more clicks. When you have an ad that really works, try to beat it with another version of the ad. This technique is called “beating the control” in the advertising world. The goal is to strive for better and better sales copy and winning ads.

I spent the summer there under the shadows of the Grand Teton range. It was the summer of 1998 and I was the Location Chef for the Grand Teton Lodge Company. My actual address was Moran Junction, a little spot in the road where you go on your way to Jackson. It was there in the midst of this Paradise that I oversaw the operation of Three feeding stations in the Coulter bay area for the Grand Teton Lodge.

The people flocked to this part of Wyoming. At the time, Park Rangers told me that over 2 million visitors come to this tiny Park alone. Then there is the Yellowstone Park that receives even more. I bet that summer, I cooked for all 2 million of them. Howbeit, I found out why they came to the area. You can find five star cuisine, plays, top name stores, wilderness, wildlife (and I don’t mean people), mountains, and much more here in Jackson Hole.

The first and foremost reason people came to this place was scenery. No where on earth can you find such majestic mountains. In the middle of these projections that reached to the sky, the animals would graze. From Elk, Deer, Mountain Sheep, Coyote, Foxes, Ground Hogs, Moose, Black Bear, Grizzly Bear, Birds of all sorts, Fishing of all sorts, were here. They would be in there natural surroundings of Pines, water, boulders, trails, valleys, springs, and people. Yes, people. They knew you were looking, but they did not mind it. People would take their time glassing the grasses for what wildlife they could see. It was relaxing, It was gorgeous, and it was wilderness you could drive too.

This was a place where people could get away. I met people from New York, Florida, Great Britain, Asia, California, and many other places. Over the time that summer, my wife even had a limited edition pencil sketch given to her by an artist who came to know her. This is a place that all walks, all professions, and all people can come. You leave the maze of people behind in the big city with all the smog and traffic. Here in the wilds of Wyoming, you could lose yourself. The Jackson Hole Conservation Alliance estimates the number of visitors to the Hole country in Jackson in the millions. In the surrounding country of this small island paradise in Wyoming, people come to know nature. This country is known as the "gateway to Yellowstone National Park in the heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. The Peaks of the Grand Tetons reach 13,000 feet above the valley floor.

The second reason people come here is the family friendly nature of the area. There is simply so much to do, so much for everyone, people like it here. The first place to stop is the Jackson Hole chuck wagon dinner. As is described on their website, if you’re hungry come to camp where you will find "massive grills sizzle with layers of beef and barbeque chicken. Oversized cast-iron skillets clank loudly as hired-hands prepare homemade beans and fresh corn for this evenings feasts". "This is eating the cowboy way, grub is slathered upon your plate". This is where you can eat all you want too. The wide-open spaces, the cool crisp evening, the smell of the wood, along with the waft of the pine breeze all make you hungry. The open sky full of stars beneath the Tetons makes it a perfect get away. The next place to stop is the Teton Wagon Train and Horse adventure near Yellowstone Park. They say on their website that "it is voted the True West Magazines, Best Wagon Train Experience". As you head out on a Conestoga Wagon, your trek will take you with rubber tires and padded seats on a four day-three night trip. Full of grub, places to sleep, and plenty of wildlife to see like the loon and Trumpeter Swan, along with Moose, Elk, and Deer. There are also Fishing trips, floating trips, white water rafting, hiking trips, helicopter flights, and many more activities in the area.

The third reason people come is the scenic routes and easy access. You can drive from Jackson Hole on highway 26-89-191 south to the Grand Teton Park. Go to the 42 mile Teton Park Scenic Loop. This can be accessed from two other main roads as well. It virtually links Jackson Hole, the Grand Teton Park, Yellowstone Park, and even Dubois. Be sure to bring a map, to make sure you find the spot to turn off. The highlights of this drive are unbelievable. The Snake river winds to this road and the Parks. I recommend finding good hotels and making reservations in advance. If you get online you can find great deals and save yourself money. On top of that most online reservation systems like Orbit or Hotels.com will tell you what the accommodations are like and give you peoples comments on the places they have stayed. One place I recommend is to stay at Coulter bay. You can stay in Cabins that have a dated history. For dinners, there are many places to eat at plus a nice walk on Teton Lake shore sides when you are done. You can also take boat rides, go canoeing, charter fishing boats, go on a fish fry in the middle of the lake to one of the small islands, or even watch the wildlife there. Don’t be surprise to see a bear, moose, or deer close by.

There is nothing like this country in the summer. The roads can get a bit crowded, but I spent the whole season there, it is a great place anytime. I recommend you do come early in the season or late, as both these times have an extra special touch. You can talk with people, that work in the area, and get to know them. They can fill you in on what to do and where to go. These are the times you can sit quietly and write, make music, take pictures, meditate, pray, and enjoy the scenery. It will make you want to come back. Believe me, the colors are vibrant, the animals are wild, the place is serene, and the people are friendly. It’s a place I like to go and you will too.

Yes, this is the time of year to get all of the dust out of the garage and clean up the mess you made all winter long.

Get organized for spring chores, get all of the tools and equipment ready and hunt down all of the ‘lost’ winter fix-it tools.

Plan of Attack
Set aside 2 consecutive days for organizing your garage. One day for tearing it apart and putting it back together and the next day for organizing wall space.
You will need to take everything out, boxes, bikes, lawnmowers, snow blowers etc.

Dump and Declutter
Keep in mind when you might use items again! “Just in case” is not a sufficient reason to keep all the items in your garage. Decluttering is just as important in this space as any other in your home. Once you have made decisions about what you are keeping, it is time to define categories for storage. Categories for your garage might be outdoor toys, hardware, tools, gardening, and automotive. If you have wood scraps, be sure to store these together but don't keep every scrap, the ceiling is a good place to store these items. Don‘t forget you have storage room above the overhead doors that can be used for long flat things.. Also, take this opportunity to clean your garage, sweeping out bugs, dirt and more!

Keep It Reachable
Once you have created your categories, put things that you use the most in easy access and things that are ‘sometime’ things can go up higher. Use wall and ceiling space to maximize your area. Put up shelves to put boxes on and label them so you can ’look and find’. Electrical, hardware, peg hooks, etc. However, keep as much as you can off the floor.

Organizing Bins, Storage Containers Etc.
When purchasing organizing products for your garage, retail stores have wonderful and inexpensive products, look in every department for things to use. Such as a piece of pipe is good for hanging things on and very sturdy and unbendable; Garage items can be very heavy and need extra support, you might want to add extra supports or make them out of wood.

Metal shelving units are popular, but don‘t forget to use the wall space at the top of the wall. Shelving can go up here, be out of the way and is great for those things you only use once or twice a year.

Sturdy plastic containers with lids that seal are an excellent way to keep bugs and dirt away. Label everything you have in containers for easy searching.

Being able to actually use your garage and find everything without wasting time hunting for it are rewards for your hard labor.

The Customer Is King

All too often we think ‘we know what is best for our business’ when in fact we do not know if the customer agrees with us or not! The good news is that most business operators are keen to gather new information – but the bad news is that many will never put any of the ideas they read into action! It is not so much that they do not believe what they are reading or hearing – it is more the fact that it is more ‘comfortable’ to continue along the same path as before. They justify this path of non action by saying “it is better the devil you know than the devil you don’t know.” Just remember – ‘non action means no results!’


Another thing that busy operators tend not to do is measure the results of what they do put into practice. If you place an advertisement, keep a record of what the ‘hits’ are you get as well as the sales. Then change ONE thing – it may be the heading; it may be the price; it may be some of the wording; it may be the guarantee; then check the results again. Be prepared to do this a few times until you get the winning combination for your target market.


It never ceases to amaze me how much money people will spend to gain new customers e.g. through advertising; but virtually spend nothing to keep existing customers. The old adage ‘the customer is always right’ is still relevant and real. It is also the case that ‘without customers you do not have a business’.


So put some time into developing customer incentives and reward systems; keep hard at work to build on your relationship via a newsletter and website; be prepared to invite them as guests to seminars and conferences you go to (you may pay for them or just invite them to join you); give them gifts at appropriate times of the year – in other words – treat them like kings and queens – make them feel special. This is the way to get a customer to become your ambassador and ‘spread the word’ about you, to their individual networks.


If you want your business to be on ‘everyone’s lips’ then don’t neglect your existing customer’s lips. Word of mouth is a powerful tool. As well as treating your customers admirably, you need to build credibility and trust. What can you do to make your business ‘stand out from your competitors?’ Think about it from a customer’s perspective. Let’s say, you, (the customer) are looking for an electrician. You check out the local papers and phone books and find fifteen listed. Which one will you choose? Your choice may be based on the headline; the text; or a graphic – but basically your choice will be based on luck! Now re-wind. If one of those 15 electricians had a ‘star rating’ and this was indicated in their advertisement – wouldn’t you be tempted to pick that one?


Everyone knows what a ‘star rating’ means; so if you are rated, you will definitely increase your customer base and add credibility for your existing customers to take notice of. Never underestimate the importance of making your customers feel special – you, as a customer, like to feel special – don’t you? Spend some time and effort into putting strategies into place to reward and thank existing customers and you business will grow and prosper.

If you expect to make your dreams come true, whatever they might be, you need to first be wiling to adopt proven savings strategies. The first and most important of these is that of setting a goal and developing a plan to reach it. It isn’t important what the goal it, but it must be something that you really want and cannot afford out of simply the paycheck you earn. It should be something that is reachable or you will become frustrated and give up on it. That doesn’t mean that if your dream is to live in a mansion and own several luxury cars you should give it up. No, of course you should never give up on your dreams nor should you allow anyone else to steal them from you, but as you begin your adult life, you have to set goals that are obtainable within a reasonable period of time and build on those.

Of course, some of you are now asking what is meant by setting small goals that are obtainable instead of going for the rainbow. Simply put, it means that you take something small that you really want and start with that. Let us assume for the moment that you live in Massachusetts and have a friend from your old hometown who now lives in Florida. You have a one-week vacation that is already scheduled six months in the future, and you’d like to use that to visit your friend. You can do that no matter what your income level with just some careful planning. First, you have to figure the time of year you are traveling – keep in mind that if you are flying, the summer months are going to be the most expensive. If possible, you might want to think of taking your vacation in the spring or fall instead when you can pay off-season rates on both the airplane and accommodations in the event your friend is unable to accommodate you during your stay.

Once you know how much the trip is going to cost you, the next step is to develop a plan for saving the money. The best way to do this if it is offered is have money deducted from your paycheck and deposited into a savings account. The reason this option is so often suggested is because we are conditioned to having so many things deducted from our pay such as taxes, insurance, retirement plans, and the like, that a few more dollars would not be noticed, AND we don’t miss what we don’t see. It seems impossible for the average person to save $20 a week out of their pay, yet if that same $20 is deducted from their paycheck, they find a way to live without it. Doing this may mean you have to sacrifice some things, but that is the purpose of goal setting: to reach a goal by using whatever means you need to use in order to achieve the culmination of that goal.

Once you have started with your little goals such as your trip to visit your friend, you can move on to bigger things. Starting with small goals allows you the opportunity to see that it can be done with the right plan, whereas starting with a big goal such as buying that mansion by the sea will only make you frustrated as you try to achieve something that at the beginning is not obtainable. It’s just like a diet: you don’t lose twenty pounds all at once, but you do it in steps. Beginning small and working your way to the top rung of the ladder is going to get you there smoother than if you tried to do it all at once.

Perennials are not difficult to grow and maintain (after all, they regrow year on year), and they positively thrive in very difficult sites, such as shady corners or areas with permanently moist soil. But does that mean we can have a beautiful perennial garden that is maintenance-free? Well, not quite: in this world you don't usually get something for nothing. Follow a few simple plant care guidelines, however, and your perennial garden will delight you with a healthy, vigorous display for a minimum of work.

Before we look at the different aspects of maintaining a healthy perennial garden, just a few words about the importance of careful planting. The greater the care taken with soil preparation, selection of healthy plants and adequate watering at the very outset, the less work you will have further down the line. You will be able to spend more time relaxing in your garden enjoying the wonderful display if, initially, you have given your perennials the optimum growing conditions in which to thrive.

Both feeding and watering established plants in your perennial garden should definitely not be time-consuming chores. Established perennials, grown on well-cultivated land and well-watered when first planted, require little in the way of feeding and watering. An annual application in the spring of general purpose granular fertilizer or blood, fish and bonemeal should supply all the nutrients your plants will need. Care should be taken to avoid scorching leaves, flowers and stems when applying the fertilizer.

Watering of mature plants should be minimal. Not only does this make sense in terms of conserving precious water, but also in saving you hours of work. Of course, prolonged periods of drought might call for some watering of your perennial garden. Try, though, to use “grey”, recycled water or rainwater collected in a water-butt. Remember, too, when you do need to water do so later in the day and direct the water down into the roots. As with fertilizer, keep water away from the foliage: water droplets on leaves evaporate under an intense sun to leave brown scorch marks.

From watering to the dreaded weeding – an audible groan immediately goes up for this onerous chore! But is this really so bad? Why not uproot weeds when they're small? This way you make the job easier and, importantly, avoid disturbing your plants' roots. Better still, why not apply an organic mulch in spring or summer when the soil is moist? You'll suppress weeds while, at the same time, you'll also be helping to retain the soil's moisture and improve its structure. Shredded bark and stone chips make a good, decorative, weed-suppressing soil covering.

Perhaps, though, from a plantsman's point of view, the best solution to weed suppression is planting. Columbine, for example, is a natural colonizer and self-seeder: if allowed to spread quite freely weeds are naturally suppressed. Low-growing, creeping perennials, like catmint, fulfil the same function. A luxuriant, naturalistic planting scheme in a perennial garden is the best weed-suppressant of all; easy on the eye and easy on the back!

Of course, there is a difference between luxuriant growth and congested growth. Foliage and flowering displays can be improved by:

1.Thinning or picking out shoots: delphiniums, lupins, and michaelmas daisies benefit from this treatment.

2.Cutting back old flowered stems to promote regrowth: delphiniums, catmint and salvias
respond well and will give a second display.

3.Deadheading, or removing, flowerheads as they fade: chrysanthemums, phlox, lupins, and panstemons will produce a second flush of flowers.

4.Dividing vigorous perennials every three to five years e.g sedums, irises and bergenias. Replant the healthiest, newest sections.

All the above are hardly arduous jobs and, in the case of division, infrequent. These gentle tasks, carried out regularly throughout the summer, exemplify the more relaxing and enjoyable aspects of maintaining a healthy, aesthetically-pleasing perennial garden. “Little and often” is the key.

Staking perennials is, for many, as much a chore as weeding. Different types of perennials have different requirements:

1.Delphiniums and other tall-stemmed perennials should be tied loosely to a cane when 8-9 ins. tall.

2.Clumps of perennials, tall asters and astilbes for instance, bebefit from link of ring
stakes which can be raised as the plant grows.

But, as with weeding so with staking: why not obviate the need for staking in the first place by choosing free-standing perennials such as hardy geraniums, day lilies and columbine? Alternatively, look out for the newer, more compact versions of old favorites like delphiniums and asters which, when used together with free-standing plants, will still provide you with a wonderful display but little work.

Finally, when plants have finished their display, the dead foliage and stems need tidying up and cutting back to the base. But is this all strictly necessary in the fall? Why not leave attractive stems and flowerheads to overwinter in the garden? The rimed forms of asters, sedums and phlomis look truly spectacular in a winter landscape as do the tough plumes and spikelets of grasses. If given a little protection, grasses, like miscanthus offer a welcome sight of warm beiges and browns while the yellow-striped carex and red-tinged hakonechloa persist throughout the winter. In keeping with the principle “little and often”, finish tidying up before new shoots appear. That's not too bad, is it?

So, to sum up: plant with care and choose your plants with care. In this way you will enjoy a perennial garden that offers the best of both worlds: maintenance-lite but still offering a visual delight even in the depths of winter.

Getting the right light fixtures and bulbs for each room of your home can be a challenge, but if you plan it out correctly, they can help you enjoy the time spent at home so much more. Let's take a look at some sample home lighting design ideas for different rooms of a typical home.

For the living room, you'll want to have enough general lighting for such a large space. This general lighting can come from one or more main ceiling fixtures, or perhaps several indirect lighting fixtures that reflect light down from your ceiling and provide soft illumination for the entire room.

However, you will also most likely want to include specific task lighting for certain activities that may be performed in the living room. This could include reading or sewing. Most likely a large ceiling fixture, perhaps equipped with energy efficient florescent tubes will do well to supply the overall general lighting for the room. But then consider installing strip lights underneath your cabinets that will clearly light up your countertops and work areas. And perhaps a few recessed lights in the ceiling can focus even more light on your sink area and range. Generally speaking, the more specific task lighting you can have in a kitchen, the better.

Bathrooms have their own specific lighting needs, including a recessed downlight in the ceiling over your shower or tub area. But perhaps the most common area for lighting fixtures in a bathroom is around the mirror. Here's where you want really soft and gentle lighting that leaves no shadows under your eyes, nose, and chin. Very often this is accomplished with lighting strips on each side of the mirror that contained several small wattage bulbs. Many people find that soft white fluorescent bulbs seem to work best in this area.

In the bedroom a general lighting fixture is very useful for illumination of the entire room. But then installing specific task lighting at the dressing table area can be very beneficial too. And recessed lighting on the ceiling placed on a dimmer switch can be used very effectively to set a romantic mood whenever you desire.

We decide to lose weight because of any number of reasons: we don’t like the way we look, our clothes don’t fit, our health is in danger, our significant other is wandering, our job is at risk, or our kids are embarrassed. We tend to think of weight loss as something that involves only our body; surely no one ever decided to lose weight because of a fat brain or a bloated mind.

Yet “we decide” is a mental function. When and why we make such a decision depends on our mind, not our body. We may make the decision when we are five pounds heavier than we would like, or after passing the two hundred pound mark and entering true medical obesity. The actual size of the body does not trigger the decision to lose weight, such a choice in made in the brain.

Since the start (and the continuation) of a diet program is a mental process, it would seem to be worthwhile to explore what factors might trigger such a decision.

1. Self-Image.

Each of us has a dual image: the face we turn to the world and our internal idea of how we appear. Although we dress and groom ourselves in an effort to be seen as attractive by others, we are far less influenced by others than by our satisfaction, or dissatisfaction, with ourselves.

Explore this concept by observing yourself and others over the course of the next week. You will notice that you often receive compliments on clothes you wear that, to you, don’t feel “quite right.” Wear a favorite outfit that fits perfectly, that you think looks outstanding, and that makes you feel especially dashing – and no one notices! The same phenomenon occurs with a hairstyle. One morning, rushed for time, you can’t get your hair to do anything so you angrily pull it back with clips and hope that no one important sees you looking so awful. Voila! Three people comment that they like what you’ve done with your hair.

There is the same disconnect when it comes to our weight. If we look good in our mind’s eye, we don’t feel fat, even if friends and coworkers are whispering about our steady weight gain. However, if we see ourselves as overweight, no amount of reassurance from those around us is going to make us feel less fat. Carried to the extreme, this mental picture of our body size can lead to the eating disorder anorexia nervosa in which painfully thin individuals continue to dangerously restrict their caloric intake because they consistently see themselves as too heavy.

We decide to go on a diet, therefore, in response to our internal self-image. Some of the benefits we envision that go along with being slim and fit do take others into account: I will be more attractive to the opposite sex; I’ll be noticed at work when it’s time for a promotion; my family and friends will be jealous and will have to re-evaluate me as a stronger person than they had thought. But the real payoff for getting in shape is what it does for us personally. It is the desire to feel great about ourselves that carries us through the pain and monotony of diet and exercise. It is the future vision of ourselves in our mind that spurs us toward our goal. Losing that vision, or concluding that we won’t feel that much better about ourselves, are the reasons we give up and fall back into the relative comfort of settling for just “okay.”

2. Body versus Mind dominance.

We all wage a lifelong internal battle between our body and our mind. Each is dominant at different stages of development. As infants, we are little more than a collection of sensations. We explore the exciting new world around us through touching everything within reach, tasting everything we can put into our mouths, watching the movements of everything around us, and listening to all the sounds we hear until we eventually learn to imitate them.

As we move into our early school years, we start to concentrate on our minds. We voraciously devour immense amounts of information. We learn to read and our world expands its boundaries by a thousand percent. We learn to use the Internet and a limitless universe is at our fingertips.

Then we move into puberty and, overnight, our appearance becomes the dominating factor in our everyday lives. We navigate the pitfalls and pleasures of adolescence where popularity and being cool are so much more vital than mere learning or mental development. We spend an inordinate amount of time on our bodies. We try new clothes, new hairstyles, and new makeup. We have body parts pierced and undergo the pain of a tattoo because it will make us stand out. We primp, and groom, and force ourselves into the styles our peers have judged as “in.”

As we mature, we seek to balance our mental and physical selves. While our bodies reign supreme in the attract-a-mate environment, we need to exercise our minds to advance our careers and to develop deep relationships that move far beyond mere physical attraction.

It is when we settle down, and start to build the good life we want, that our efforts and energies turn towards things outside ourselves: children, significant others, friends, family, and work pursuits. We have so much happening around us and so much to do that we lose touch with both our bodies and our minds. We slip into our own comfort zone where so many of our needs are fulfilled by food. It eases our anxiety, relieves our frequent frustrations, and makes periodic bouts of the blues bearable. It oils our social interactions. It becomes a vital cog in how we demonstrate affection for those we love. We continue to see ourselves as we have always been and ignore the love handles and pockets of fat that attach themselves to parts of our body we resolutely ignore. Our bodies, and our internal image of our bodies, become more and more discordant.

3. Our sense of self-efficacy.

Self-efficacy is a term used in psychology to describe an individual’s belief that any action they take will have an effect on the outcome. It is not self-confidence, nor a belief that one is competent to do something, although it may involve both. It reflects our inner expectation that what we do will effect the results we want.

If I lack this belief, then I fear that whatever I do will not bring about my desired goal. Bordering on helplessness, it leads to self-defeating thoughts:

“No matter how carefully I diet, I don’t lose weight . . .” “I could work out every day but I’ll never get rid of these thunder thighs . . .” “I try to eat healthier foods but my hips just keep on spreading . . .” “No matter what techniques I try, nothing is going to keep the wrinkles away . . .”

If I have a strong sense of self-efficacy, my belief system and thought patterns will sound like:

“All I have to do is get motivated and I can whip my body into shape in a few weeks . . .” “I just need to pick a date to start my diet and I’ll be on my way . . .” “I may have neglected myself for a while but some hard work will bring me back . . .”

Whether or not we start a diet, decide to get in shape, or start taking better care of ourselves is, ultimately, a personal decision which may, or may not, be made as we have planned. The difference lies in the expectation of success and it is always easier to set out on a journey we anticipate will be successful than it is to drag ourselves toward a goal where failure is the most likely outcome.

How can we combine these concepts to work for us in our desire to become slim, fit, and attractive?

We begin by examining our self-image and how we appear to others. Merely asking others “Do you think I’m getting too heavy?” doesn’t work unless you have a brutally honest friend or you ask someone who dislikes you. Most of us are culturally trained to spare others’ feelings so responses to such a question are more likely to be polite than true.

Concentrating on specifics can produce better feedback. Tell everyone that you’re completing a survey for a class you’re taking. Hand out a brief one page questionnaire requiring that each friend or coworker list three adjectives to describe different aspects of your physical appearance. Complete one of the sheets yourself. Make sure that the answers are anonymous by requesting that no names be used and having someone else collect the completed sheets.

Once you have the responses back, compare them to your own answers and see where the descriptions diverge. You may find yourself becoming a little defensive: “My hips aren’t that big . . . my clothes do too make me look slim.” This isn’t an exercise to make you feel bad about yourself nor for you to gloat over the unexpected complimentary remarks you received. It is an organized effort to help you identify where your self-image and your image-in-the-world move apart. Those areas of divergence are a place to start in the effort to make the two images overlap.

Once the areas where work is needed have been identified, it is time to call on the immeasurable strength of our wonderful mind to start imposing the structure and organization we are going to need to effect the desired changes. Our mind can only get us where we want to go if it is supported by a belief in our ability to bring about a successful conclusion. Now is the time to dismiss any expectations of failure. There may have been many unsuccessful dieting and fitness attempts in the past. Leave them in the past. We are not somehow doomed to continue unproductive behaviors forever. We possess that jewel of evolution, the human mind, which is capable of just about anything. If we set our mind to any task, it will accomplish it, if our doubts and misgivings don’t get in its way.

We build up our positive expectations by exploring our memories to pile up a long list of prior successes. There may be major benchmarks such as bringing about a promotion we wanted, orchestrating a fantastic event, or working ourselves into an intensely satisfying relationship. However, the small personal triumphs count the most but are usually quickly forgotten or discounted as unimportant.

Studying hard and obtaining a good grade in a difficult class clearly demonstrates your ability to bring about the results you want. Go for quantity: the day you smiled at someone across a smoky room and ended up with a brief but lovely affair; the report you brought in on time which no one expected; the night you mastered a spin on ice skates. Keep going: making the drill team, shooting a stolen basket, making your own prom dress, dying your hair a wonderful color in your own bathroom, catching a fly ball, figuring out new software on your computer, burning your first CD. The list can be endless and will be, as you keep remembering snippets of the past that you had long buried under more important things.

Keep this list close by and read it regularly. It is your personal self-efficacy pep squad.
